La Ferrovia delle Meraviglie

Discover the Ferrovia delle Meraviglie

Crossing the Maritime Alps between Italy and France, the Ferrovia delle Meraviglie connects Cuneo and Limone Piemonte with the Roya Valley, Ventimiglia and Nice. The railway travels through a dramatic landscape of Alpine ridges, exposed rock faces and deep river-cut gorges, following a route shaped by geology and mastered through exceptional engineering.

A Railway Built Across Two Centuries

The first sections opened in the late nineteenth century, but carrying the railway across the Maritime Alps required decades of construction and international cooperation. Between 1889 and 1898, the 8.1-kilometre Colle di Tenda railway tunnel was excavated between Limone Piemonte and the hamlet of Vievola, with the section opening in 1900. The complete routes to Ventimiglia and Nice were inaugurated in 1928. Severely damaged during the Second World War, the line remained interrupted for decades before being rebuilt and officially reopened in 1979.

Spiral Tunnels, Viaducts and Hidden Defences

Spiral tunnels curve deep inside the mountains, allowing the railway to gain or lose altitude without exceeding safe gradients, while imposing stone viaducts cross steep slopes and narrow gorges. The line also conceals military works integrated directly into its tunnels: some contained firing positions covering the railway tunnel itself, while others were accessed from inside the tunnel but faced outwards to control the surrounding valley and approaches. Several survive today, although they are generally inaccessible to the public.

From the Mediterranean to the Alps

Beginning just above the Mediterranean coast, the railway leaves palm trees and seaside vegetation behind as it climbs through the increasingly narrow Roya Valley. Rocky gorges and limestone walls replace the coastal landscape before the train reaches Vievola, almost 1,000 metres above sea level. It then enters the Colle di Tenda railway tunnel on the French side and emerges near Limone Piemonte in a rugged Alpine environment a true journey through the geology and history of the Alps.

Bike & Train Tours on the Ferrovia delle Meraviglie

During the quieter months, the railway creates unique possibilities for exploring the Roya Valley and the Mediterranean Alps by bike. We can travel inland from the coast to begin riding at a higher station, or cross from the Piedmont side towards the milder French and Ligurian valleys when snow, frost or low temperatures make cycling around Cuneo less enjoyable.

Each Bike & Train Tour is designed around the season, railway service, weather and trail conditions. The route and stations are carefully selected for the group, creating an original winter adventure in which the train is not simply transport it becomes part of the experience.

Ferrovia delle Meraviglie F.A.Q.

1. Where can I find the current Ferrovia delle Meraviglie timetable?

Services and departure times can change according to the season, railway works and operational conditions. Before travelling, always check the latest timetable through Trenitalia for the Cuneo–Ventimiglia route and SNCF Connect or TER Sud for connections towards Nice. Check again shortly before departure, especially when travelling with a bicycle.

2. How long does the journey take?

Journey times depend on the selected section, timetable and possible connections at Breil-sur-Roya. Ventimiglia – Limone Piemonte around 2 and a half hours. Travelling along the entire route should be considered part of the day rather than a quick transfer.

Can I take a mountain bike or e-bike on the train?

All trains have designated bicycle spaces, but capacity is limited and cannot always be guaranteed. Bicycle transport is subject to the operator’s rules and the space available on board. Some conductors enforce these rules very strictly, while others may be more flexible, but passengers should always be prepared to follow the official requirements. Look for the bicycle symbol when selecting a service. Heavier e-bikes can be more difficult to load, particularly at stations with low platforms or limited access.

Do bicycles require a separate ticket or reservation?

On Italian trains, bicycles require an additional ticket, which can be purchased through the Trenitalia app or directly on board. Bicycle spaces are not reservable and depend on availability. For the French section, requirements may vary by service, so check the latest bicycle transport conditions on the SNCF Connect or TER Sud website before travelling.

Is bicycle space guaranteed on every train?

No. Bicycle spaces are limited and may not be reservable, depending on the service. Boarding can be refused when the designated area is full or when bicycles would obstruct passengers and exits. Groups should never assume that several bikes can be loaded without checking the train and preparing an alternative plan.

6. What happens if a train is cancelled or replaced by a bus?

Rail replacement buses do not normally guarantee the transport of full-size bicycles or e-bikes. Engineering works, strikes, severe weather and unexpected disruption can therefore make the planned journey impossible. In these situations, cyclists should always have a Plan B ready. WolfTrails is the best choice for finding the right alternative and helping you adapt your journey when travel plans change.
