Tour F.A.Q.
How difficult is the Bardonecchia MTB History Tour?
The tour follows generally easy and non-technical historic military roads. However, the high altitude, changing weather and remote Alpine environment require a spirit of adventure, reasonable fitness and basic mountain biking experience. Each route can be adapted to the group and ridden by MTB or e-MTB.
Which historic military roads can be included in the tour?
Depending on the number of days, seasonal access and mountain conditions, the itinerary can include Monte Jafferau, Colle del Sommeiller, the Strada dell’Assietta and the Galleria dei Saraceni, as well as routes towards Colle della Scala and the historic territory beneath Mont Chaberton.
Which historical periods are explored during the tour?
The tour mainly explores Alpine military history from the 18th century to the Second World War. Depending on the route, riders can discover battle sites, historic military roads, 19th-century fortifications and 20th-century defensive works built along the Italian–French frontier.
Is the tour only for military history enthusiasts?
Not at all. Military history is an important part of the experience, but the tour also offers spectacular high-altitude riding, remote valleys and some of the finest historic mountain roads in the Western Alps. Historical explanations are adapted to the group’s interests, making the tour enjoyable for riders with or without specialist knowledge.
Can we visit the military fortifications during the tour?
Yes. Depending on the route, the tour can include stops at forts, defensive positions, military tunnels and other historic structures. A visit to the Forte Bramafam Museum can also be arranged, offering an exceptional insight into the Second World War and the wider history of the Italian military. Museum visits depend on opening dates and availability.
