The Legendary Roads of the Western Alps

The Western Alps Divide brings together the greatest historic military roads of the Italian Alps into one extraordinary journey. From Bardonecchia, the route climbs into the high-altitude landscapes of Colle del Sommeiller and Monte Jafferau, continues through the Galleria dei Saraceni and onto the legendary Strada dell’Assietta.
Heading south, the journey reaches the Occitan valleys and follows the panoramic Strada dei Cannoni before crossing the Gardetta Plateau in Valle Maira, one of the most extraordinary high-mountain landscapes in the Western Alps.
The final section joins the Alta Via del Sale, tracing its spectacular military roads across the Maritime and Ligurian Alps before the long descent to the Mediterranean Sea. Together, these legendary routes weave an uninterrupted journey through the history, landscapes and wild spaces of the Western Alps.

Tour F.A.Q.

How difficult is the Western Alps Divide?

The tour follows mainly non-technical gravel tracks and historic military roads. Its real challenge comes from spending many consecutive days in the mountains, so good fitness, endurance and previous multi-day cycling experience are recommended. Daily distances and elevation gain can be reduced to create a more comfortable itinerary.

What makes the Western Alps Divide a once-in-a-lifetime journey?

Over 10 to 12 days, the tour connects the legendary military roads and landscapes of the Western Alps, from Bardonecchia to the Mediterranean Sea. Sommeiller, Jafferau, Assietta, Strada dei Cannoni, Gardetta and the Alta Via del Sale become part of one extraordinary and fully organized mountain journey.

Can the Western Alps Divide be adapted to the group?

Yes. The number of days, daily distances, elevation gain and pace can all be adjusted. Easier route options, strategic shuttle support and carefully balanced stages allow the group to experience the complete Alpine journey without turning every day into a physical challenge.

Do I need experience riding for several consecutive days?

Not necessarily. With additional shuttle support, the tour can be adapted to reduce the daily physical effort. In its standard format, however, it is technically easy but involves long stages, significant elevation gain and several days at high altitude. Good endurance is therefore recommended to enjoy the complete journey comfortably.
