The Alta Via del Sale Self Guided+ Experience
Self Guided+ is our way of letting you ride the Alta Via del Sale at your own rhythm, without giving up the local knowledge, safety net and attention to detail that define every WolfTrails journey. You ride independently, following tailored GPS tracks built from years of exploring this historic military road across the Italian and French Alps while WolfTrails handles the logistics behind the scenes: accommodation, luggage transfers between stages, and remote support for the full duration of your trip. It’s the freedom of riding solo, backed by a team that already knows every junction, refuge and shortcut along the way.
Before you go. Once your dates and route are confirmed, you’ll receive GPS tracks for the whole itinerary as a starting base, to follow on your own device.
Each day. You ride the stage at your own pace, following the GPS track. Every evening, we debrief the stage you’ve just ridden and go through the plan for the next one, adapting the tracks if conditions, pace or anything else calls for it. Your luggage is transferred ahead to your next accommodation, so you carry only what you need on the bike.
If something happens. We do what we can to help with a mechanical problem, a wrong turn or a change in weather, but keep in mind that parts of the Alps have no phone signal, so support isn’t always immediate. Whenever we can be reached, we’ll help you adjust the route or arrange assistance.

Really enjoyed our experience with Roberto. He tailored an e-MTB tour for me and my son based on our availability. My son and I had not done a lot of mountain biking so Roberto provided great instruction and chose routes that were in keeping with our skill level but also allowed us to challenge ourselves. He knows the region very well, including lots of its military history. Would definitely book with him again if we ever make it back to the area.

Roberto levererade en resa långt över förväntan. Vårt specifika upplägg handlade om tre dagars cykling, med boende på fyra olika hotell. Vi fick uppleva fantastisk cykling, bodde på väl utvalda hotell och åt riktigt bra mat hela resan. Jag har tidigare varit på flera liknande resor i bland annat Finale Ligure och Aosta-dalen. Alla har varit bra, men den här resan var snäppet över på de flesta punkter. Kan varmt rekommendera!

We did a self-guided tour of the Alta Via del Sale with support from Roberto. Roberto is a wonderful and caring guide who created well-planned routes for our skill level, taking us through magnificent scenery. He ensured our safety by tracking our progress via GPS and was ready to assist with any mechanical issues, which unfortunately did occur for one of our group during the trip. Some of the routes were quite challenging, but it was all worth it. It was an unforgettable experience. This package included everything, and the food and accommodation were exactly what we expected. I highly recommend Roberto for self-guided tours, and we will definitely use his services again if we ever return to the Alta Via del Sale.

Choose Your Duration
The Alta Via del Sale Self Guided+ can be ridden over three, four or five-plus days, all starting from Limone Piemonte and following the historic military road across the Conca delle Carsene and Bosco delle Navette, where high alpine terrain gradually shifts into Mediterranean landscape. GPS tracks guide you stage by stage, while WolfTrails arranges accommodation and transfers luggage ahead to each stop. Three days is the minimum format, best suited to confident, reasonably fit riders who want the core experience without extra logistics. Four days adds a more relaxed pace, with room to explore additional valleys, historic villages or a stop at a mountain refuge. Five days or more is the extended format, for riders who prefer a slower rhythm, want rest days built in, or wish to combine the Alta Via del Sale with nearby routes on their own terms. Daily stages and distances are adapted to your pace and preferences regardless of the duration you choose.
Some Alta Via del Sale tours can include a visit to the Museo Vallo Alpino di Vievola, where Roberto has worked as a volunteer for years. He will personally guide you inside the restored bunker, revealing the military history of the Col de Tende frontier and the stories hidden beneath the mountain.
Where you stay and eat is an essential part of every WolfTrails journey. We select accommodation for outstanding service, comfort and character, often choosing hidden local gems over better-known locations. From authentic mountain stays to premium hotels and dining, every detail can be tailored to your group.
Self Guided+ means you ride the Alta Via del Sale independently, without a guide on the bike beside you, but with everything else taken care of: GPS tracks, pre-booked accommodation, luggage transfers between stages, and an evening debrief and briefing to check in on the day and plan the next one. It’s independent riding without the usual DIY planning and risk.
What is the best time to ride the Alta Via del Sale?
The main season generally runs from June to October, depending on snow, weather and road conditions at high altitude. Each itinerary is planned around seasonal access and the safest available routes.
Do I need advanced navigation skills to ride self-guided?
No advanced navigation experience is required. Every Self Guided+ tour includes GPS tracks to follow on your own device, given as a base for the whole itinerary and adjusted day by day at our evening debrief and briefing. Basic comfort using a GPS device or smartphone app is helpful.
What happens if I have a mechanical issue or lose the route during the tour?
Our 4×4 support vehicle is your safety net: equipped as a mobile workshop with tools and spare parts, it can reach you on the route for a mechanical repair, a route change or any other issue. Some areas of the Alps have no phone signal, so we’re not always reachable the instant something happens, but every situation is also picked up at the evening debrief, and the vehicle is dispatched wherever it’s needed.
Is my luggage transported between accommodations?
Yes. Luggage is transferred ahead to your next accommodation for every stage of the tour, so you only need to carry what you need on the bike during the day.
Where does the Alta Via del Sale tour start and finish?
All the itineraries start in Limone Piemonte. The finishing point depends on the chosen route: the tour can reach the Ligurian coast or return to Limone. Transfers and luggage transport can be organized around the complete journey.
