Alta Via del Sale – 2 Day Tour
Ride the essence of the Alta Via del Sale in just two days, following its historic military road from Limone Piemonte across the high-altitude landscapes of the Western Alps. The route crosses the distinctive karst terrain of the Conca delle Carsene and climbs towards Bosco delle Navette, where high mountains gradually give way to Mediterranean vegetation. From here, two itineraries unfold: descend through the Ligurian Alps to the coast, or continue into France on a cross-border loop back to Limone Piemonte. Both options capture the full character of the Alta Via del Sale in a compact two-day MTB or e-MTB format, ideal for riders short on time who still want to discover the landscapes, history and remarkable geographical variety of the route, without compromise.
The three-day MTB or e-MTB tour is our recommended way to experience the full character of the Alta Via del Sale, striking the best balance between riding, exploration and travel. Starting from Limone Piemonte, the journey follows historic military roads across the Italian and French Alps, linking Colle di Tenda, the Conca delle Carsene, Bosco delle Navette, remote valleys and the Mediterranean side of the route. Additional transfers by train or private minivan complete a well-connected itinerary without sacrificing the quality of the riding. The extra day also opens time to explore historic fortifications, Alpine villages and some of the most fascinating bunkers hidden along this former military frontier, with distances, elevation gain and pace all adapted to the group, for the most complete way to experience the Alta Via del Sale.

Really enjoyed our experience with Roberto. He tailored an e-MTB tour for me and my son based on our availability. My son and I had not done a lot of mountain biking so Roberto provided great instruction and chose routes that were in keeping with our skill level but also allowed us to challenge ourselves. He knows the region very well, including lots of its military history. Would definitely book with him again if we ever make it back to the area.

Roberto levererade en resa långt över förväntan. Vårt specifika upplägg handlade om tre dagars cykling, med boende på fyra olika hotell. Vi fick uppleva fantastisk cykling, bodde på väl utvalda hotell och åt riktigt bra mat hela resan. Jag har tidigare varit på flera liknande resor i bland annat Finale Ligure och Aosta-dalen. We did a self-guided tour of the Alta Via del Sale with support from Roberto. Roberto is a wonderful and caring guide who created well-planned routes for our skill level, taking us through magnificent scenery. He ensured our safety by tracking our progress via GPS and was ready to assist with any mechanical issues, which unfortunately did occur for one of our group during the trip. Some of the routes were quite challenging, but it was all worth it. It was an unforgettable experience. This package included everything, and the food and accommodation were exactly what we expected. I highly recommend Roberto for self-guided tours, and we will definitely use his services again if we ever return to the Alta Via del Sale.

Esperienza bellissima, la consiglio a chi non ha esperienza con bike e sentieri di montagna, ma anche agli esperti perché merita un’escursione accompagnati dalla guida Roberto per esperienza, cordialità e soprattutto professionalità. The extra days open access to remote valleys, historic villages, fortifications and lesser-known trails, tracing the changing landscape from high mountains down to the Mediterranean. All transfers are included and organised by WolfTrails, using private minivans or the historic railway where appropriate. With greater logistical support, more time for history and local culture, and an itinerary tailored in detail to your group, the Grand Tour is the most extensive and exclusive way to experience the Alta Via del Sale.
Some Alta Via del Sale tours can include a visit to the Museo del Vallo Alpino in Vievola, where Roberto has worked as a volunteer for years. He will personally guide you inside the restored bunker, revealing the military history of the Col de Tende frontier and the stories hidden beneath the mountain.

The Alta Via del Sale follows a historic mountain road rather than technical singletrack, but its surface can be rough, uneven and occasionally badly damaged. Basic mountain biking experience and reasonable fitness are recommended, especially because of the distance, elevation gain and high altitude. The route can be completed without advanced technical skills, with enough time to walk a few short sections whenever necessary. Daily stages are adapted to the group and can be ridden by MTB or e-MTB.
What is the best time to ride the Alta Via del Sale?
The main season generally runs from June to October, depending on snow, weather and road conditions at high altitude. Each itinerary is planned around seasonal access and the safest available routes.
What happens if bad weather affects the tour?
If unexpected bad weather develops during the tour, the itinerary is adapted to keep the group safe. When severe weather or an official weather alert is forecast before arrival, we assess the situation in advance and reorganize the program, change the route or arrange a suitable alternative whenever possible.
How many days are recommended for the Alta Via del Sale MTB Tour?
The tour can be organized over two, three, four or five days. Two days offer a compact experience, while three days allow a more complete journey through the Italian and French Alps. Longer itineraries explore additional valleys, historic routes and Alpine villages.
Does the Alta Via del Sale tour always reach the Mediterranean Sea?
No. The two-day tour can follow an Alps-to-Mediterranean route or remain in the high mountains on a loop through Italy and France. Longer versions offer more possibilities, including complete mountain-to-sea journeys and routes returning to an Alpine environment.
Where does the Alta Via del Sale tour start and finish?
All the itineraries start in Limone Piemonte. The finishing point depends on the chosen route: the tour can reach the Ligurian coast or return to Limone. Transfers and luggage transport can be organized around the complete journey.
