Self-Guided MTB Tours in Italy

What Are Self-Guided MTB Tours in Italy?

Self-guided MTB tours in Italy let you ride independently across the Western Alps, from remote high-altitude passes to the Mediterranean Sea, while WolfTrails takes care of the planning, logistics and safety net around you. Available across our Touring Adventures and All-Mountain & Enduro tours, Self-Guided+ is more than a GPX file: it combines GPS tracks adapted day by day, a pre-tour briefing, pre-booked accommodation, luggage transfers and 4×4 bike shuttles, plus GPS tracking of your group for the whole trip. Every itinerary is tailored to your experience, fitness and riding style, from scenic high-alpine routes to technical MTB and e-MTB adventures reaching the Mediterranean Sea. You ride independently — we take care of the journey around you.

Who Self-Guided+ Is For

Self-guided MTB tours in Italy suit riders who are comfortable managing their own pace and following a GPS track, but don’t want to spend days planning logistics themselves. You don’t need advanced navigation experience — just basic confidence with a GPS device or smartphone app. It’s the format for riders who want the freedom of an independent trip with the reassurance of local support close by if anything goes wrong.

We take care of the journey around you.

Which Self-Guided MTB Tours in Italy Are Available?

Self-guided MTB tours in Italy are available on request for almost any of our multi-day MTB and e-MTB tours of two days or more — for single-day rides, we recommend one of our guided tours instead. Two itineraries currently have a full Self-Guided+ page with all the details worked out:

Alta Via del Sale Self Guided+ — 3 to 5+ days along the historic military road from Limone Piemonte, crossing high alpine passes down toward the Mediterranean.

Mediterranean Alps Grand Tour Self Guided+ — 6 to 7 days connecting multiple Alpine valleys, from remote mountain terrain to the Ligurian coast.

How Experienced do I need to be for a Self Guided+ Tour?

You should be comfortable riding independently, managing the expected distance and terrain, and following a GPS track on your own device. Advanced navigation skills are not required, but you should know how to use your GPS device or navigation app confidently.

What’s Included in Self Guided+ Tours?

Custom route planning for the entire tour with day-by-day adjustments when needed, a pre-tour briefing, GPS tracking, pre-booked accommodation, luggage transfers, 4×4 bike shuttles and local logistics.

Are your SG+ tours suitable for different riding levels?

Yes. Thanks to a high level of customisation, WolfTrails tours suit a wide range of riders. Terrain, distance, elevation gain and technical difficulty are selected according to your experience, fitness, riding style and confidence on the bike.

What happens if I have a problem during the tour?

Our 4×4 support vehicle is equipped as a mobile workshop with tools and spare parts, ready to reach you for a mechanical repair or to recover you and your bike when necessary. We track your position by GPS throughout the tour, so even in areas with no phone signal, if you’re stationary longer than expected, recovery starts anyway — we don’t wait to hear from you.

What is the difference between guided and Self-Guided+ tours?

On a guided tour, a professional local guide rides with your group and adapts the experience along the way. With Self-Guided+, you ride independently using carefully prepared GPS routes, while WolfTrails provides remote assistance, live tracking, local logistics and bike-shuttle support.

How does GPS tracking and remote support work?

Self-Guided+ riders receive tested GPS routes and a detailed briefing before departure. During the tour, WolfTrails can follow the group through live GPS tracking (InReach Technology) and provide remote assistance if you encounter any issues.
